Why Everyone Is Talking About Algorithmic Trading
Discover what’s driving the surge in automated trading and what beginners must know before getting started.
Hello and welcome back to The Finance Lens!
If you have ever watched the market move in milliseconds and wondered, Who is buying and selling so fast?, it is mostly algorithms.
But let’s pause for a moment.
Algo trading is not some secret, high-tech universe anymore.
It is slowly becoming something even regular investors want to understand.
And honestly? They should.

So What Exactly Is Algorithmic Trading?
Let’s strip away the jargon.
Algorithmic trading simply means: You set a set of rules → a computer follows them → trades happen automatically.
No emotions.
No hesitation.
No FOMO.
Just rules.
Think of it like switching from manual driving to automatic.
You still choose the direction, but the machine helps you avoid mistakes, distractions, and panic braking.
What does an algorithm include?
Usually 3 things:
Entry Rule – When to buy or sell
Exit Rule – When to close the trade
Risk Rule – How much to buy, what’s the stop-loss
That’s it.
Every algorithm ever made is just a combination of these 3 pillars.
Where do these rules come from?
From strategies like:
Moving averages
Breakouts
Momentum
Mean reversion
Option strategies
Volume spikes
Statistical correlations
But the rule itself can be as simple as: “Buy Nifty when it goes above yesterday’s high with above-average volume.”
You don’t need to be a coder.
You need clarity.
Why Are Algorithms Winning Today?
Because an algorithm is a disciplined version of you.
While you are thinking: “Market looks weak… but maybe I should still enter…”
The algorithm is thinking: “Condition not met. No trade.”
Algorithms do not get greedy.
They do not seek revenge.
They do not break rules.
In markets where speed + discipline matter, that is a massive edge.
But Let’s Clear the Biggest Myth: Algo Trading is Complicated
People imagine:
Rocket science math
Coder-level skills
Huge servers
Millions of capital
Truth?
You can build a basic algorithm on many platforms using drag-and-drop conditions.
You don’t need to code.
You don’t need to be a quant.
You only need a rule-based approach.
And trust me, most traders don’t have one.
Is Algo Trading a Money-Making Machine? No.
Let’s stay honest.
Algo trading is not about “predicting the market.”
It is about reacting to the market consistently and emotionlessly.
In the same way, Google Maps does not remove traffic, but it stops you from taking stupid turns.
Algo trading doesn’t guarantee profit.
It increases consistency.
And in trading, consistency is priceless.
Where Do People Go Wrong?
1. Expecting unrealistic returns
A good algorithm aims for steady returns, not jackpots.
2. Overfitting
Tweaking backtests so perfectly that the strategy works only on past data.
3. Quitting too early
Every strategy has losing phases.
People panic and switch systems.
That’s a guaranteed way to fail.
Why Algo Trading Is Actually Powerful
Because it forces you to be disciplined.
It makes sure you:
Follow your rules
Respect stop-losses
Manage risk
Never trade out of emotion
Never chase news or tips
In a world full of noise, having a system that stays calm is a superpower.
Should You Try Algo Trading?
Choose algo trading if you:
Struggle with emotional decisions
Can’t monitor markets all day
Want a structured, data-backed style
Prefer probabilities over guessing
Want to remove impulsive trades
Avoid it if you are seeking shortcuts or overnight miracles.
A Final Thought
Algo trading is not the future - it is happening now.
And understanding it does not require coding skills or a finance degree.
It only requires one thing: A willingness to replace emotional trading with systematic decision-making.
Because at the end of the day, an algorithm is just this: Your strategy, executed perfectly, without the version of you that panics, hesitates, or gets greedy.
And that’s a version of yourself worth investing in.
